Recently, my roommates and I have started watching Desperate Housewives from the very first season on Netflix. Since we don't have cable, we have to get creative with what we watch. Desperate Housewives is a soap opera that could be a little better in the acting area, however I still feel the need to watch it. My main concern with this show is that all of the "housewives" are way, way too skinny. Their ribs and collar bones are always popping out and it looks unhealthy. One instance that really stuck out to me was when one of the housewives, Gabrielle Solis, was pregnant. In one episode, after three months of being pregnant, she went shopping. While she was shopping she was trying on a dress and it was a little tight. The worker asked her if she wanted to go up to a size zero, she then got upset and exclaimed that he was a double zero and criticized the worker for calling her fat. She then decided that she would not eat for two days so she could fit into the dress. Wait, what? I don't think this is any way to promote how to be healthy, let alone while being pregnant. After 48 hours of crash dieting she finally fit into the dress, but what message has now been permanently left with the viewers? I don't think that something like that should have been allowed to air. Although that may have been a small scene in the entire episode, let alone the series, something that small can stick with women and kids for a lifetime. I think that this show should promote better health by making sure that the housewives are at a healthy weight.
Check out the clip of the episode (the scene is around 7:00 minutes.)

Those reality shows are just too much, In my sex and the media class mco473 we had a guest speaker that produces reality shows. He said the prefect recipe for a great reality show is sex, fighting and crying. If you can get people (preferably girls) to fight over sex with crying during the fighting then it's it a mega hit. During class he showed his hit show Basketball Wife's and I was shocked. It seems those shows are at a hard fast race to the bottom and of course obsession with female body type is tops on the list. The thing about those shows is they appeal to human nature and it's so easy to get hooked.

ReplyDeleteThis was shocking to read. Why would anyone strive to be a double zero if they were not naturally that way? And what’s even worse is the diet. I watch Desperate Housewives and it’s not the safest show and it is a bit controversial. But I always thought it was cute and quirky. However I’m not sure why anyone thought this would be funny or cute. And your right Anna those few minutes of irresponsibility could really stick with someone.
ReplyDeleteReality shows are based on just pointless drama. They encourage society to focus on negative traits such as an individuals weight, hair color, style, etc. Traits should be positive such as an individual's personality, what he/she does in life to help others, or their responsibility/maturity level. They portray all women to be overly sexual and only care about money and men to be egocentric shallow human beings.
