Road Trip
Over the weekend I went on an eight-hour car drive to
Telluride, Colorado. I love road
trips because it gives me a chance to eat and drink all the junk food I
normally pass up at gas stations. However, for this trip I made it my own
personal goal not to purchase anything from the various gas stations along the
way. I was on a tight budget for this trip, and thought that preplanning my
road trip meals would be a great way to save a little cash and eat healthy.
The first step I took, on my quest to eat cheap and healthy,
was to prepare a list of food and beverage opinions that would be easy to pack. I
find going to the store with a set list helps me stay on budget, which was my
ultimate goal for this trip.
I would
normally purchase items like cola, candy, and chips. But this time my list
consisted of fresh fruit, deli meats, and bottled water. I chose to stay away
from prepackaged food and instead bought ingredients to make my own meals. For
example, I bought a bunch fruit to make fruit cups. This ended up costing me
less and I avoided the extra sugar that is in prepackaged fruit cups.
By sticking to my grocery list I was able to save money and
eat healthy. I didn’t purchase anything from a gas station and I know my body
was very happy to receive nutritious food before a big weekend of snowboarding.
Below I included my advice for people looking to stay on budget and eat healthy
on the road.
Road Trip Tips:
1.
Determine your budget for groceries.
2.
Prepare a list before you go to the store and
stick to it!
3.
Instead of grabbing a bag of chips, pick up some
fresh fruit or string cheese.
4.
Make your own sandwiches instead of buying them
pre-made.
5.
Stay away form soda and stock up on bottled
water or 100% juice packs.
Alexandra,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your blog for many reasons, I do the same thing eat clean and then usually pig out during vacation time. No one realizes especially in the car how much junk food they really are consuming, usually it’s not just me that grab one or two snacks it’s whoever is in the car and then we soon have ten junk food snacks. Grabbing a bag of chips is clearly cheaper than purchasing a cup of fruit, so I liked how you took the time and made small fruit cups along with the other healthy snacks. Truly eating healthy does take time reason why a lot of college students don’t, they don’t have the time to prepare the food or snacks. Thanks for showing me a helpful tip for road trips
Since our birthdays are only two days apart from each other, my boyfriend Chris and I usually ride the bus with Alpine Ski Club & Adventure Tours to Telluride. It makes for a hassle free ski trip when lunch on the bus, lift tickets, lodging and good people are all included. We also do our fair share of shopping to prepare for such an adventure as well, I consider it a good habit and it definitely saves tons of money along the way. If there is one thing I learned from my boy its that he loves snacks! The best snacks include healthy foods that aren't high in fat or sugar. These also include dried fruit with no added sugar, crackers made from whole grains or oat-based granola bars.
ReplyDeleteI do the same stuff when I go on a road trip!! Very bad, but it's almost expected when you go on a road trip to get a bunch of junk food, isn't it? Especially when going on a trip that involves any type of physical activity, it's very important to get in your healthy, well-balanced meals to sustain energy levels during your work out or physical activity. I thought there were some great tips in your blog and I will definitely have to try the fruit cups, along with only water, instead of the chips and gatorades. I have a cooler and ice, so why not?!
ReplyDeleteStopping at gas stations for horrible food is half the fun of going on a road trip! With that being said I am always tired and drowsy when we arrive at the destination so maybe eating healthier would be a wise decision. Everything on the road is so taxed anyway, you end up spending a lot more then you should so I guess it only makes sense to shop smart and healthy before hand and use the extra money saved for your vacation. Besides if you eat only junk on the way to and back from your destination your bound to feel sluggish for a few days until you can get some real nourishment for your body, so anyone might as well skip the unhealthy step.
